Raising Charitable Kids
Charity begins at home, so raising charitable kids begins now.
Teaching children about charity helps them understand that everyone, including them, needs help at some point in their lives.
Being charitable includes being able to give money when you have it and being kind and helpful to others who need it.
Awareness
It’s being mindful of what you have and still use—toys, clothes, books.
Creating an awareness mindset of what to share and when it’s appropriate will help children live lives where they create and maintain a clutter-free environment and learn to be generous people who give from the heart.
Helping your child understand when to ask for what they need is vital, too, because while you want your child to be empathic and compassionate, you also want them to balance themselves with self-care.
Teaching children about charity and encouraging them to give teaches the values of sharing and generosity and boosts their self-esteem through these positive actions.
Understanding
When children have a clear understanding, it can lead to a more confident and empathetic child.
When children are young, they realise that not everyone is as lucky as they are.
Children might assume that everyone is just like them.
They only know about less fortunate people if taught.
Children are often naturally sympathetic and want to help those who need it.
Creativity
How often have you seen kids on social media who want to suggest or do something charitable because they’ve devised an idea on their own?
I’ve seen teenagers collectively purchase school shoes for a classmate because he needed them.
I’ve also seen a child raise funds for people experiencing homelessness.
Additionally, I’ve seen kids develop entrepreneurial ideas about making teddies for sick children in hospitals.
Then, there is the boy who built a windmill for his community.
Children have unique ideas and no insecurities regarding what they can achieve with supportive people who believe in their abilities.
Developing a giving mindset benefits the individual and the community.
For all the Barefoot Investor fans, Scott Pape encourages kids to give while teaching them about finances.
