Congruence - Your Child Believes What You Do

Children Copy Your Life, Not Your Lectures

"Children don't become what we repeatedly tell them. They become what we repeatedly see us do."

Have you ever caught yourself saying something to your child and then realised, moments later, that you were doing the exact opposite?

"Be patient."

...while becoming impatient.

"Put your phone away."

...while checking one more email.

"Always tell the truth."

...then telling a harmless little white lie.

If you've done that, welcome to the club.

You're human.

We all have a gap between the parent we aspire to be and the parent we are on our most tired, stressed or distracted days.

The wonderful thing about Congruence is that it doesn't ask us to become perfect.

It simply asks us to make that gap a little smaller.

One decision.

One conversation.

One ordinary day at a time.

Because children don't need perfect parents.

They need authentic ones.

Parents whose actions gradually become more aligned with the values they hope to pass on.

Actions Always Speak Louder Than Words

Children begin learning from us long before they understand expressions such as honesty, respect or integrity.

They're watching.

Watching how we speak to our partner.

Watching how we treat strangers.

Watching how we respond when we're under pressure.

Watching how we handle disappointment.

Watching whether we apologise when we're wrong.

Every one of those moments quietly teaches them something about life.

As parents, childcare educators and teachers, we sometimes underestimate just how much influence we have.

The truth is, children are always learning from our lessons and our lives.

Not just from our lessons...

But from our lives.

Your Child's Inner Voice Begins With Yours

One of the greatest gifts—or greatest burdens—we can unintentionally give our children is the voice that eventually becomes their own.

The words children hear repeatedly become the words they begin saying to themselves.

If they regularly hear:

"I saw how kind you were when you did… "

"I love your perseverance and how hard you kept trying."

"Mistakes help us learn."

Those messages gradually become part of their identity.

But if they repeatedly hear:

"You're lazy."

"You'll never get it right."

"Why can't you be more like your brother?"

Those words can become negative beliefs.

In short, beliefs shape habits and habits shape identity.

Sadly, many adults are still carrying statements that were spoken over them decades ago.

That's why congruence matters.

If we tell our children we believe in them...

Our actions should communicate the very same message.

Five Ways to Practise Congruence Every Day

1. Speak to Your Child the Way You Hope They'll One Day Speak to Themselves

👶 Toddler

• Encourage rather than criticise.

• Celebrate trying.

• Comfort after mistakes.

🎒 Primary School

• Praise effort.

• Encourage problem-solving.

• Replace criticism with coaching.

🎓 Teenager

• Build confidence through respectful conversations.

• Listen before giving advice.

• Encourage independent thinking.

🌱 Adult Outcome

Children develop healthier self-esteem, greater resilience and a positive inner voice that supports rather than limits them.

🎯 Purpose

Children eventually become the voice they hear most often.

2. Let Your Actions Match Your Advice

👶 Toddler

• Teach courtesy - by saying please and thank you.

• Be helpful - pack toys away together.

• Teach patience - talk about the importance of waiting in line.

🎒 Primary School

• Keep your promises.

• Tell the truth.

• Admit mistakes.

🎓 Teenager

• Honour commitments.

• Demonstrate integrity online and offline.

• Show respect during disagreements.

🌱 Adult Outcome

Children become adults whose words carry credibility because they live what they believe.

🎯 Purpose

Congruence builds trust.

3. Apologise Without Excuses

👶 Toddler

• "I'm sorry."

• "Daddy made a mistake."

• "Let's fix it together."

🎒 Primary School

• Admit when you've overreacted.

• Correct misunderstandings.

• Thank them for their honesty.

🎓 Teenager

• Return to difficult conversations calmly.

• Acknowledge when you were wrong.

• Rebuild trust through consistent actions.

🌱 Adult Outcome

Children learn humility, accountability and how to repair relationships rather than avoid them.

🎯 Purpose

Apologies teach strength.

4. Protect Your Family's Connection

👶 Toddler

• Teach them to play without technology.

• Read together.

• Enjoy cuddles.

🎒 Primary School

• Eat dinner together.

• Listen after school.

• Create simple family traditions.

🎓 Teenager

• Schedule regular conversations.

• Take walks together.

• Be emotionally available.

🌱 Adult Outcome

Children become adults who value relationships over distractions and know how to build healthy emotional connections.

🎯 Purpose

Connection builds trust.

5. Parent With the End in Mind

Before responding, ask yourself:

"If my child copied this behaviour every day for the next twenty years... what kind of adult would they become?"

👶 Toddler

• Celebrate kindness.

• Demonstrate patience.

• Model patience.

🎒 Primary School

• Praise responsibility.

• Encourage honesty.

• Value perseverance.

🎓 Teenager

• Discuss values.

• Encourage integrity.

• Acknowledge their courage and other positive character traits, more than popularity.

🌱 Adult Outcome

Children grow into adults who make decisions based on values rather than convenience or peer pressure.

🎯 Purpose

Every parenting decision prepares your child for adulthood.

Congruence isn't about getting everything right.

It's about growing more consistent.

It's recognising that our children are watching us more closely than they're listening to us.

Every apology matters.

Every promise kept matters.

Every encouraging word matters.

Every ordinary interaction matters.

Because children don't simply remember what we taught them.

They remember what they saw us live.

Perhaps this week is a wonderful opportunity to ask yourself one simple question:

"If my child copied everything I did today, would I be proud of the adult they become?"

None of us will answer "yes" every single day.

But every day gives us another opportunity to close the gap between what we say...

...and what we do.

And that's what Congruence is all about: closing the gap between what we say and what we do.
