Perceptiveness - How to Nurture Emotional Intelligence Now

Perceptiveness, like all character traits, is within us and can be used to nurture emotional intelligence, also known as EQ.

You want to help your child develop their emotional intelligence because it's essential to creating and maintaining a healthy relationship.

Emotional intelligence requires the knack of identifying, understanding, and handling our emotions and the emotions of others.

There is a substantial link between perceptiveness and emotional intelligence. In this post, we will explore how perceptiveness helps children grow in their emotional intelligence and why it's crucial for their overall development and has a life-long impact.

What is Emotional Intelligence?

Emotional intelligence is the ability of a person, including a child, to recognise and control their emotions, understand other people's feelings and guide social situations successfully.

It includes other character traits such as empathy, compassion and self-discipline. Plus, skills such as social awareness and emotional self-control.

Emotional intelligence is responding to your emotions and the emotions of others healthily and constructively.

How Perceptiveness Develops Emotional Intelligence

  • Enhanced empathy –Perceptive children are good at picking up other's emotions. It could be noticing when someone is sad, upset or feeling left out, children often emphasise with others.
I once saw a social media post in which a mother asked her son why he sat on the knee of an elderly neighbour who was sitting on his porch. The child responded, 'So I could help him cry'. The man's wife had recently died. The child went to the man and put his hand on his knee, indicating he wanted to sit on his knee. This is an example of a child who was just being perceptive.
  • Better emotional regulation—Perceptive children understand their feelings better. The more children can recognise their feelings, the more self-aware they become. They grow in their ability to regulate their emotions and reduce emotional outbursts. These Character Traits of the Week contribute to their self-awareness of their behaviour and feelings as they grow and develop.
  • Stronger social skills—Perceptiveness allows children to recognise body language and tone of voice and trust their intuition. Kids who can' read the room' are good at building rapport, cultivating friendships, handling interpersonal relationships, and developing strong bonds.

Helping your child build Emotional Intelligence

  • Encourage active observation – Encourage your child to listen to people's feelings and body language. Ask them questions such as "How do you think that person is feeling?" or "What causes you to feel this way?"
  • Teach emotional vocabulary: "Help your child express their feelings by teaching them words to describe them. The more words they have, the better they can recognise, understand, and manage their feelings.
  • Model Emotional Intelligence – Role model how to regulate emotions and emphasise with others daily. Kids constantly watch you and others and learn a lot from observation.

By nurturing your child's emotional intelligence, you are planting the seeds for emotional intelligence, which will help them guide their relationships during their school years and choose friends who make life happier.
